Herschel Bluestein Levin, Self Defense Instructor (he, him, she, her)

I am a self defense instructor with a passion for empowering LGBTQ+ individuals and communites, as well as religous and racial minorities. I believe strongly that self defense and social justice go hand in hand. Training can help you become more resilient and can be a powerful healing tool. Classes pull from Brazilian jiu-jitsu and kickboxing.

Learn to defend yourself and have fun doing it!

  • I provide an essential service

My courses are trauma informed. LGBTQ+ individuals as well as others marginalized groups are no stranger to threats of violence. I believe that we should have a safe space to train, one where we are understood and helping to empower others who know our struggles, or sympathies with them. Through martial arts training I hope that we can find healing, and lead safer, empowered lives.

  • Learn how to avoid dangerous sitations

Courses are statically based. It is impossible to prepare for every possible scenario, however by looking at the most common situations that occur, we can learn strategies to keep yourself, your loved ones, and your community safer. Together we can discuss verbal deescalation, how and when to safely intervene, consent and relationships, and learn techniques to help you survive.

  • Why brazilian jiu-jitsu and kickboxing?

Kickboxing utilizes striking through punches and kicks. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is used to control your attacker through holds, joint locks, and chokes, and is especially useful if you both end up on the ground. Pairing them together creates a well rounded system of strikes and holds. Training is designed to be as realistic as possible by practicing with trusted partners.
